The Johnsons are thankful for all of our 'community helpers' and try to find ways to express to our boys how important police officers, firefighters, EMT workers, etc. are to us. A perfect opportunity to meet a few of these heros presented itself in the form of the No. 1 Volunteer Fire Dept. Annual Breakfast and Open House - we took full advantage and headed over one Saturday morning.
Mr. Corey took Cole under his wing and explained every detail of the fire engine. Cole was mesmerized and took in the info. about each button, door, and tool.
Cade also loved sitting in the front and playing with the equipment.
Although the pancakes were good and the boys enjoyed a fun outing, Michael and I walked away with a ton of information that (as good citizens) we probably should've known. Because this is a
volunteer fire dept., they receive NO funds from the city/county. A very small, tax-free donation is given at the end of the year, but it barely covers the cost of gas for the engines. So sad. . . especially with the new stations being built around town. Made me appreciate the men and women of No. 1 Firehouse that much more and their commitment to keeping my family safe. Anxious to see how the Lord will lead our family to help support these assets to our community.
The land on which the station sits was free (it doesn't perk so no on site bathroom), no firefighters stay on site because the station doesn't offer amenities, the building is old, furniture (or lack thereof) is worn, and the pay - what pay? The chief and a few others live close to the station, so if a call comes in, they get the engines ready, while the others meet at the scene. That's dedication!
We also learned that they do training, etc. the 1st and 3rd Saturday mornings of each month. You can bet we'll be showing up more often with some goodies and thank-yous on those days :)
