Fun on the Fourth

After our cookout and fireworks on the third, we were looking forward to a more laid back 4th of July.  It was a bit odd having no set plans, but was definitely nice to just go with the flow.

Our day began with storytime at Barnes & Noble.  If you've never been to storytime there, it's a must to check out.  After stories, every child makes a craft and they then have animal crackers and milk.  It's all free every Saturday and Monday morning at 11:00.  This Saturday, the theme was fireworks and picnics to celebrate the holiday.  The kiddos then made a watermelon craft (Cole's looked more like a rainbow melon), and enjoyed their snack.  We made a few new friends and enjoyed playing with Thomas the train afterwards.

After storytime, it was back home for lunch and a nap.  Around 5:00 we headed to LHBC's annual 4th celebration.  We have never been, but will definitely make this a yearly tradition.  Despite the on/off again rain, the campus was full of people playing, eating, listening to live music, and just plain having fun.  Now that we've been, we'll know to dress Cole in his swimming gear from now on.  They had a lot of water games and the H'ville Fire Dept. showed up in full force with the fun foam.  

The highlight of the evening for us was letting Cole ride a pony.  He was tentative to ride at first, but had a blast once we started moving.  Afterwards, we immediately phoned Grandpa (who owns a few horses on his farm in Chattanooga) to let him know of Cole's newest adventure.  He was so proud and can't wait to take Cole on a 'big' horse around the farm.

We didn't stay for the firework show (the rain was a little much for us), but we enjoyed turning out all the lights in the house that evening and watching the Macy's Firework display and the Boston celebration on TV.  What a fun day celebrating the freedom that we enjoy in the good ol' USA.
